In Acts 1:8, we are reminded of the divine empowerment that comes through the Holy Spirit. “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.” This verse speaks to the incredible mission entrusted to believers—a mission that extends beyond our immediate surroundings to the farthest corners of the earth.
As we consider this promise of power, we must also reflect on the wisdom Jesus illustrated in the Parable of the Ten Virgins (Matthew 25:1–13). In this parable, we encounter ten virgins waiting for the bridegroom. Five are wise, bringing oil for their lamps, while five are foolish, neglecting to prepare. When the bridegroom arrives, only those with oil enter the marriage feast, while the others are left outside, unprepared and without access to the joy of the celebration.
The connection between these two passages is profound. The power of the Holy Spirit equips us to be witnesses, but it also requires us to be wise stewards of that power. The wise virgins were prepared; they understood the importance of having oil in their lamps, which symbolizes the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Just as the wise virgins took the necessary steps to be ready for the bridegroom’s arrival, we too must be vigilant and prepared to fulfill our calling as witnesses of Christ.
In a world filled with distractions and uncertainties, the need for spiritual preparedness cannot be overstated. The Holy Spirit empowers us, but we must also be intentional in cultivating a relationship with Him. We need to ensure our lamps are filled with oil, allowing His light to shine brightly through us. This preparation enables us to share the Gospel effectively and impact those around us, from our local communities to the ends of the earth.
Let us not be like the foolish virgins, caught unprepared when the moment of opportunity arrives. Instead, let us be wise, filled with the power of the Holy Spirit, and ready to share the love of Christ with everyone we encounter. As we await the return of our Bridegroom, may we live in such a way that we reflect His light and love, drawing others into the joy of His presence.
