In John 11:26, Jesus declares, "And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?" This profound statement is a cornerstone of our faith, reminding us that true life is found in Him, and that belief in Christ grants us eternal life. However, as we ponder this promise, we must also reflect on the wisdom Jesus imparts through the Parable of the Ten Virgins in Matthew 25:1–13.

In this parable, ten virgins await the bridegroom, but only five are wise enough to take extra oil for their lamps. When the bridegroom arrives, the unprepared virgins find themselves in a desperate situation, unable to join the wedding feast. This story serves as a poignant reminder that belief in Christ is not merely a one-time event but a continuous journey of preparation and vigilance.

The connection between these two passages is striking. Jesus assures us of eternal life for those who believe, yet He also emphasizes the necessity of being wise and prepared. To live and believe in Him means we must actively cultivate our faith, much like the wise virgins who ensured their lamps would remain lit. It is not enough to simply declare our belief; we must nurture it through prayer, study of the Word, and fellowship with other believers.

As we await His return, we must ask ourselves: Are we living in a way that reflects our belief in Christ? Are we filling our lamps with the oil of faith and good works? The wise virgins were not just waiting; they were actively preparing, and so must we be.

Let this truth ignite a passion within us to live wisely. To believe in Jesus is to embrace a life characterized by readiness, faithfulness, and expectation of His coming. It is an invitation to examine our hearts daily and assess how we are living out our faith. Are we, like the wise virgins, investing in our relationship with Christ?

As we meditate on the promise of eternal life, let us also commit to being vigilant and wise. The world around us can often lead us to distraction, but we are called to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith.

Today, let us reflect on the following self-assessment questions:

1. How am I actively nurturing my faith in Christ on a daily basis?

2. In what areas of my life do I need to prepare more diligently for His return?

3. Am I living in a way that reflects the belief I profess in Jesus and His promise of eternal life?

May we all strive to be wise and prepared, shining brightly for Christ as we await His glorious return.
