In a world that often equates success with self-preservation and personal gain, Jesus offers a radical perspective. He proclaims in Matthew 10:39, "He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it." This paradox challenges our understanding of true fulfillment. To find life in losing it is a divine mystery that calls us to a deeper commitment to Christ.

In Matthew 25:1–13, the Parable of the Ten Virgins further illuminates this principle. Here, we see ten bridesmaids waiting for the bridegroom, representing the Church's anticipation of Christ's return. Five were wise, bringing extra oil for their lamps, while the other five were foolish, unprepared for the long wait. When the bridegroom arrived, only those who were ready entered the wedding feast. This parable teaches us the importance of being prepared and living in a way that reflects our commitment to Christ.

The wise virgins understood that true life is found not in momentary pleasures or the pursuit of self-interest, but in the readiness to serve and honor the bridegroom. They were willing to sacrifice their time, energy, and resources to be prepared. In losing their focus on immediate gratification, they gained the ultimate reward of being welcomed into the celebration.

Jesus’ call to lose our lives for His sake invites us to prioritize His kingdom over our desires. It urges us to invest in eternal things rather than the fleeting comforts of this world. When we let go of our need for control and comfort, we open ourselves to a deeper relationship with Christ, where true life resides. The wise virgins exemplify this by their proactive readiness, demonstrating that losing our life in service and preparation results in the ultimate fulfillment.

As we reflect on these teachings, let us ask ourselves:

1. What areas of my life am I clinging to for security or fulfillment instead of surrendering them to Christ?

2. How am I preparing for the coming of Christ in my daily life? Am I living with an eternal perspective?

3. In what ways can I serve others and invest in God's kingdom rather than focusing solely on my own needs?

May we seek to be wise in our preparation and ready to lose our lives in service to Christ, so that we may truly find the abundant life He offers. Let us fill our lamps with oil and be ever watchful, knowing that in losing our lives for His sake, we find the truest and most fulfilling existence.
