In Leviticus 20:7, we read, "Sanctify yourselves therefore, and be ye holy: for I am the Lord your God." This call to holiness echoes throughout Scripture, reminding us that our Creator desires a people set apart for His purposes. Holiness is not merely an external observance; it is an inward transformation that manifests outwardly as we reflect the character of God in our daily lives.
This theme of sanctification and readiness resonates profoundly with Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 25:1–13, the Parable of the Ten Virgins. In this parable, ten virgins await the arrival of the bridegroom. Five of them are wise, having brought extra oil for their lamps, while the other five are foolish and unprepared. When the bridegroom arrives at midnight, only the wise virgins are ready to enter the wedding feast, while the foolish ones are left outside, knocking for entrance.
Just as the Israelites were called to sanctify themselves and pursue holiness, so too does Jesus prompt us to prepare ourselves for His return and the coming of His kingdom. The wise virgins represent those who live in a state of readiness, actively seeking to cultivate their relationship with God, ensuring their spiritual lamps are filled with oil. The oil signifies the Holy Spirit, the presence of God in our lives that empowers us to live righteously and in a manner pleasing to Him.
To sanctify ourselves in this context means to intentionally set aside time for prayer, worship, and the study of God’s Word. It involves being vigilant, discerning the signs of the times, and staying spiritually alert. It is about nurturing our faith so that when Jesus returns, we will not only recognize Him but will be prepared to enter into His eternal joy.
As you meditate on this call to holiness and preparedness, consider the following self-assessment questions:
1. In what areas of my life do I need to pursue greater holiness and sanctification?
2. Am I actively preparing my heart and spirit for the return of Christ? How can I do this more effectively?
3. Do I have the ‘oil’ of the Holy Spirit in my life, and how am I nurturing this relationship daily?
4. Are there distractions or unholy influences that I need to remove to ensure my lamp remains lit?
Let us heed the call to sanctification and wisdom, for the Lord our God desires us to be ready, to be holy, and to shine brightly as we await His glorious return.
