In moments of uncertainty, when the shadows loom large and fears whisper in our ears, we can find reassurance in the words of the prophet Elisha: “Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them” (2 Kings 6:16). This powerful reminder speaks to the presence of God’s heavenly host, standing ready to support and protect us, even when our earthly eyes cannot see the full picture.
In 2 Kings 6, Elisha’s servant was terrified as he looked upon the multitude of enemy soldiers surrounding them. But the prophet, confident in God’s provision, prayed for his servant’s eyes to be opened. When they were, the servant saw the mountains filled with horses and chariots of fire, the heavenly army that far outnumbered their foes. This heavenly support is a profound truth for us today. No matter how insurmountable our challenges may seem, we are never alone. God’s presence is with us, and His power far exceeds anything that stands against us.
This theme of readiness and watchfulness is mirrored in the parable of the ten virgins found in Matthew 25:1–13. In this parable, Jesus teaches about the importance of being prepared for His return. Five virgins were wise, bringing extra oil for their lamps, while the other five were foolish and unprepared. When the bridegroom arrived, only the wise were ready to enter the wedding feast. This illustrates that while we may not know the hour of His coming, we must always be prepared, filled with the oil of faith, and ready to shine our light.
Combining these two teachings offers a powerful message of reassurance and readiness. Just as Elisha assured his servant that they were not alone, Jesus reminds us to be vigilant and prepared. The oil represents our faith, our relationship with God, and our reliance on Him. When we are filled with the Holy Spirit and living in accordance with His will, we can stand firm in the face of fear, knowing that the reality of God’s presence is greater than any fear that seeks to overwhelm us.
As we go about our day, let us carry the assurance that those who stand with us in faith are more than the challenges that confront us. Let us also be wise, ensuring our lamps are filled with oil, so we are ready to meet the Lord when He comes.
