In a world filled with uncertainty and shifting sands, it is comforting to know that our true foundation lies in the steadfastness of our Lord. Psalm 62:6 reminds us, "He only is my rock and my salvation: he is my defence; I shall not be moved." This declaration echoes the wisdom of Jesus in the Parable of the Ten Virgins (Matthew 25:1–13), where preparedness and faithfulness are paramount.
In this parable, ten virgins await the arrival of the bridegroom, each with the same initial intention to celebrate. However, only five are wise enough to bring extra oil for their lamps, while the other five are careless. When the bridegroom arrives unexpectedly, it is the wise virgins who are ready to enter the celebration, while the foolish ones find themselves shut out in the darkness.
What does it mean to be truly prepared? Just as the wise virgins focused on the essentials—keeping their lamps filled with oil—so too are we called to ensure our spiritual lives are fortified by a solid relationship with Jesus, our rock and salvation. Life may bring challenges that threaten to shake our faith, but when we anchor ourselves in Christ, we can stand firm, just as the psalmist declares.
Being wise in our spiritual journey means recognizing that our "oil"—our faith, our relationship with Jesus, and our readiness to respond to His call—must be nurtured daily. We must not only possess faith but actively cultivate it through prayer, reading the Word, and engaging in fellowship with other believers. We should not wait for a crisis to fill our lamps, but rather make it a daily practice to ensure we are prepared for whatever life may throw our way.
The parable also illustrates the urgency of being ready. The bridegroom's arrival was unexpected, reminding us that we should always be in a posture of readiness. This readiness is not born out of fear but out of love and commitment to the One who is our defender. When we trust in Jesus as our rock, we can face each day with confidence, knowing that He will guide and protect us.
