Seek First, Stay Ready

Jesus said, “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you” Matthew 6:33. These words are not a spiritual slogan for busy days. They are a kingdom order for life. When Jesus teaches us to seek first God’s kingdom, He is calling us to keep our hearts fixed on what matters most: His rule, His will, His presence, and His righteousness. Everything else finds its proper place when He is first.

This truth shines brightly when we read Matthew 25:1 to 13, the parable of the ten virgins. All ten were waiting for the bridegroom. All ten had lamps. But only five were wise because they brought oil with them. The others had lamps, but no reserve. They had appearance, but not preparation. They had expectation, but not endurance. When the cry came, “Behold, the bridegroom cometh,” the difference was revealed.

This is the heart of wisdom: not merely looking ready, but being ready. Seeking first the kingdom means living with oil in the lamp and fire in the heart. It means daily obedience, hidden devotion, prayer, repentance, and a life that is continually supplied by God. The wise virgins could not borrow oil at the last moment, because spiritual readiness is personal. No one can live on yesterday’s surrender. No one can borrow another person’s intimacy with God. Each believer must seek the Lord for themselves.

Jesus is teaching us that the kingdom is not something we fit in after we have attended to everything else. The kingdom is first. When we seek Him first, we are not neglecting life. We are preparing for it. We are not losing time. We are filling our lamps. And when the unexpected hour comes, those who have sought the Lord will stand steady, because their lives have been built on what lasts.

Today, ask yourself: Is my lamp burning, or merely carrying the shape of a lamp? Am I seeking God’s kingdom first, or only when it is convenient? Am I living on borrowed light, or am I walking with fresh oil before the Lord?

The bridegroom is coming. Let us be wise. Let us seek first the kingdom. Let us keep oil in our lamps and our hearts ready for His appearing. For those who seek Him first will not be left empty when He comes.

Self assessment questions:

1. What am I placing before God in my daily priorities?

2. Do I have a living relationship with Christ, or only outward religious habits?

3. What practices help me keep oil in my lamp each day?

4. Am I prepared for Jesus’ coming in a way that would endure delay?

5. What must I surrender today so that the kingdom of God remains first in my life?
