Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. (2 Corinthians 5:17)

As we journey through life, we often find ourselves wrestling with our past—mistakes we've made, burdens we've carried, and identities we've worn that no longer serve us. Yet, in 2 Corinthians 5:17, we are reminded of a profound truth: in Christ, we are made new. The old has passed away, and everything is transformed. This renewal is not just a change in circumstance; it is a total transformation of our very being.

In Matthew 25:1–13, Jesus tells the parable of the ten virgins, illustrating the importance of being prepared for His return. Five virgins were wise, taking oil with them, while the other five were foolish, neglecting to bring extra oil for their lamps. When the bridegroom arrived, only those who were prepared could enter the wedding feast. This parable echoes the truth of 2 Corinthians 5:17. To be a new creature in Christ means embracing a life of readiness and vigilance; it means allowing the Holy Spirit to fill us continually, ensuring our lamps burn brightly.

The wise virgins understood the necessity of preparation. They did not wait until the last moment to gather what they needed; they actively engaged in their relationship with the bridegroom. In the same way, being in Christ calls us to be proactive in nurturing our spiritual lives. This involves prayer, reading the Word, and surrounding ourselves with fellow believers who encourage us to grow.

When we embrace our identity as new creations in Christ, we shed the weight of our past. The old things—our sins, regrets, and failures—are washed away in His grace. We are invited to live in the light of His love, and this newness empowers us to be wise stewards of the time and resources He has given us. Just as the wise virgins were ready for the bridegroom, we too must prepare our hearts for Christ's return by living with purpose and intention.

Today, let us reflect on what it means to be a new creation. Are we actively tending to our lamps, ensuring they are filled with the oil of the Spirit? Are we living in the light of our new identity, or are we still clinging to the old? God calls us to embrace the freshness of life in Him, to let the past go, and to step boldly into the future He has for us.
