Be strong and of a good courage. These words from Joshua 1:9 are not merely a command for ancient Israel; they are a living call to every believer who must walk by faith, wait in hope, and keep watch in a world that often feels dark and uncertain. God does not ask His people to be fearless because they are self sufficient. He calls them to be courageous because He is present. “For the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.” That promise changes everything.

In Matthew 25:1 to 13, Jesus told the parable of the ten virgins, and He showed us that spiritual wisdom is not only about believing the right things, but about living prepared. Five were wise because they brought oil for their lamps. Five were foolish because they had lamps, but no reserve. All ten were waiting for the bridegroom, but only the wise were ready when the cry came at midnight. Their difference was not in intention, but in preparation.

This is where Joshua 1:9 speaks so powerfully. Courage is not just bold action in the moment of crisis. Courage is the quiet faithfulness that keeps oil in the lamp before the night grows dark. It is the steady obedience that prays when no one sees, worships when feelings fade, and keeps the heart tender toward God while waiting for His timing. The wise believer does not merely hope the bridegroom will come. The wise believer lives as though He surely will.

Jesus teaches us that readiness is personal. No one can borrow another person’s oil. No one can live on another person’s faith. The Lord is with you wherever you go, and because He is with you, you can prepare with confidence rather than fear. You can keep your lamp trimmed. You can stay awake in spirit. You can choose holiness, prayer, and perseverance even when the delay feels long.

The midnight cry will come. The question is not whether the Bridegroom is faithful. He is. The question is whether we will be found wise, strong, and courageous, with lamps burning and hearts ready.

Today, do not let weariness steal your oil. Do not let delay dull your devotion. The Lord your God is with you. Keep watch. Keep filled. Keep shining.

Self assessment questions:

1. Is my lamp burning with genuine faith, or am I relying on past devotion?

2. What habits are helping me keep oil in my lamp each day?

3. Where do I need to be more strong and courageous in obedience?

4. Am I living ready for Christ’s return, or merely assuming I have time?

5. What is one step I can take today to stay spiritually prepared?
