In today’s fast-paced world, it is easy to become isolated, preoccupied with our own struggles and distractions. However, the Apostle Paul reminds us in 1 Thessalonians 5:11, “Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.” This call to community and mutual support is not just a suggestion; it is a vital aspect of our faith journey.
In Matthew 25:1–13, Jesus shares the Parable of the Ten Virgins, illustrating the importance of being prepared for His return. Five of the virgins were wise, taking oil for their lamps, while the other five were foolish, neglecting to bring extra oil. When the bridegroom arrived, only those who were prepared entered the wedding feast, while the others were left outside in the darkness. This parable emphasizes not only individual preparedness but also the collective responsibility we have towards one another.
Just as the wise virgins took initiative to prepare, we too are called to equip and encourage one another. The oil in our lamps represents the Holy Spirit, the truth of God’s Word, and the good deeds we do in His name. By comforting and edifying one another, we help to ensure that our community is spiritually equipped to face challenges and to shine brightly in a dark world.
Imagine a community of believers where each person is actively seeking to uplift and support the others. When we share our burdens, pray together, and encourage one another in our faith, we create an atmosphere of trust and love. This not only strengthens our individual resolve but also ensures that we are collectively prepared for the return of Christ.
Moreover, as we edify one another, we are also reminded to keep our lamps filled with oil. This means nurturing our personal relationship with God through prayer, reading His Word, and remaining in fellowship with His people. Just as the wise virgins were attentive to their needs, we must also be diligent in our spiritual growth, encouraging others to do the same.
As we go about our day, let us be mindful of how we can comfort and build one another up. Are we taking the time to check in on a friend? Are we sharing words of encouragement or scripture that can uplift someone in need? Let us be the wise virgins of our generation, prepared and ready, not just for ourselves but for those around us.
