In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes. (Judges 21:25)
As we reflect on the tumultuous times of Israel described in Judges, we see a stark image of chaos and moral ambiguity. Without a king, the people wandered, seeking their own paths and desires, often leading to destruction and disarray. This verse serves as a profound reminder of the importance of divine guidance in our lives. When we attempt to navigate the complexities of life based solely on our own understanding, we risk losing our way.
Fast forward to the teachings of Jesus in Matthew 25:1–13, where He shares the Parable of the Ten Virgins. In this parable, ten young women await the arrival of the bridegroom, representing Christ. Among them, five are wise and prepared, while five are foolish and unprepared. The wise virgins bring oil for their lamps, while the foolish ones do not. When the bridegroom finally arrives, the prepared are welcomed into the feast, while the unprepared miss the opportunity entirely.
This story draws a parallel to the challenges faced in the time of Judges. Just as the Israelites had no king to guide them, the foolish virgins lacked the foresight and discipline to prepare for the coming of the bridegroom. They acted based on their immediate understanding and desires, neglecting the wisdom of preparation. In doing so, they left themselves vulnerable and unready for the moment that would define their faithfulness.
The wisdom of waiting, as exemplified by the five wise virgins, teaches us the importance of preparation in our spiritual lives. It calls us to seek the guidance of the King, who is Jesus Christ, rather than relying solely on our own judgment. In a world that often encourages us to do what feels right in our own eyes, we must remember that true wisdom comes from aligning our hearts with God’s will.
As we await the return of our Savior, let us be diligent in our preparations. This means nurturing our relationship with Him through prayer, studying His Word, and being attentive to the promptings of the Holy Spirit. We must guard our hearts against complacency and strive to be wise in our actions and decisions.
