“He only is my rock and my salvation; he is my defence; I shall not be greatly moved.” Psalm 62:2
There is a holy steadiness in these words from David. He does not say that trouble will never come, or that the wind will never blow. He says that when life shakes, God holds. The Lord is not one support among many. He is the Rock. He is the Salvation. He is the Defence. Because of who He is, the soul that rests in Him need not be greatly moved.
That same truth shines brightly in Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 25:1 to 13. In the parable of the ten virgins, all ten waited for the bridegroom, but only five were wise. The difference was not in their outward appearance, for all had lamps. The difference was in their inward preparation, for only the wise carried oil. When the cry came, “Behold, the bridegroom cometh,” the foolish discovered too late that borrowed readiness cannot sustain a personal encounter with the King.
Psalm 62 and Matthew 25 meet at this point: real faith is not a momentary excitement, but a settled trust that prepares, waits, and endures. The wise are not merely those who know the right words. They are those who have built their lives on the Rock and kept their lamps supplied with oil. They have learned that Jesus is not only the One they hope to meet someday, but the One who stabilizes them today.
Oil in the lamp speaks of a life made ready, a heart kept awake, a walk kept near to Christ. It is possible to look prepared on the outside and still be empty within. But when the soul abides in the Lord, there is a quiet strength that does not panic when the hour is delayed. The wise believer keeps watch, keeps seeking, keeps filling the lamp through prayer, obedience, worship, and the Word.
Do not be greatly moved by the delays, distractions, or darkness of this world. The Bridegroom is coming. The question is not whether the night will grow deep, but whether your lamp is burning. If Christ is your Rock, your salvation, and your defence, then you can wait with confidence. You can live with purpose. You can stand firm.
Today, let your heart say with David, “He only is my rock.” And let your life say with the wise virgins, “My lamp is ready.”
Self assessment questions:
1. Is Jesus truly my only Rock, or am I leaning on other supports?
2. Is my lamp filled with oil through daily fellowship with Him?
3. Am I living watchfully and wisely, as one prepared for the Bridegroom?
4. What distractions or spiritual neglect are draining my readiness?
5. What step can I take today to stay steady, awake, and faithful?
