“I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus” Philippians 3:14
The Christian life is not a casual stroll, but a holy pursuit. Paul’s words in Philippians 3:14 call us to forward motion, intentional focus, and steadfast endurance. He speaks like a runner who knows where the finish line is and refuses to be distracted by anything that would weaken his pace. That same spirit shines through Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 25:1 to 13, where the wise virgins were prepared for the bridegroom’s arrival because they had oil in their lamps. They were not merely near the wedding. They were ready for it.
This is the call of the believer: to press on with faith that is alive, alert, and prepared. The wise virgins remind us that spiritual readiness cannot be borrowed at the last moment. No one can live on yesterday’s oil, or depend on another person’s devotion to sustain their own lamp. Each heart must be filled by the Lord through prayer, obedience, worship, and a living relationship with Jesus Christ. The oil speaks of inward preparation, hidden faithfulness, and the quiet work of grace that keeps the flame burning when the night grows long.
Paul pressed toward the mark because he knew the prize was worth everything. Likewise, the wise virgins kept watch because they knew the bridegroom would come, even if he tarried. Both passages teach us that delay is not denial, and waiting is not wasted when it is filled with purpose. The wise do not grow careless in the waiting. They stay awake, stay supplied, and stay close to the Lord.
Today, the question is not only whether your lamp looks bright, but whether your oil is full. Are you pressing toward Christ with a heart that is ready for His coming? Are you living with holy urgency, or have you become spiritually sleepy? The prize is not for the distracted, but for those who endure with eyes fixed on Jesus.
Let your soul be stirred again. Keep your lamp trimmed. Keep your oil ready. Keep pressing forward. The Bridegroom is worthy, the calling is high, and the reward is eternal.
Self assessment questions:
Am I pressing toward Christ with purpose, or drifting through my faith?
Is my lamp burning because of a real relationship with Jesus, or only outward form?
What habits are filling my life with oil, and what habits are draining it?
If the Bridegroom came today, would I be ready?
How can I stay spiritually awake and faithful while I wait?
