For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. (Romans 1:16)
In the parable of the ten virgins found in Matthew 25:1–13, Jesus teaches us about the importance of being prepared for His coming. Five of the virgins were wise; they brought extra oil for their lamps, while the other five were foolish, arriving without the necessary supplies. When the bridegroom arrived, the foolish virgins were left outside, missing the wedding feast. This story resonates deeply with Romans 1:16, where Paul declares the gospel as the power of God unto salvation. Just like the wise virgins prepared and had the oil necessary to keep their lamps burning, we too must prepare ourselves to embrace the power of the gospel in our lives.
Being unashamed of the gospel means living out its truths boldly and intentionally. It compels us to engage with the message of Christ actively and to share it with others. But are we truly prepared to do so? The wise virgins remind us that preparation is essential. The oil represents the Holy Spirit and the fruit of a life lived in communion with God. If we neglect to cultivate our relationship with Him, we risk being unprepared when opportunities arise to share the gospel and to live it out fully.
In a world that often shies away from the truth of the gospel, we must remember that the power of God is alive and active within us. This power equips us to shine brightly in darkness, just as the lamps of the wise virgins illuminated the way. As we embrace our identity as bearers of the gospel, let us ensure that our lamps are filled with oil—our hearts filled with the Holy Spirit and our lives reflecting His love and truth.
Today, let us reflect on our commitment to the gospel. Are we nurturing our relationship with Christ, allowing His word to fill us and empower us? Are we prepared to share the joy of salvation with those around us? Just as the wise virgins made the effort to be ready, we too must be intentional in our spiritual walk.
As we go forth today, let’s carry the light of the gospel boldly, knowing that it is the power of God for salvation. Let us be wise, prepared, and unashamed, ready to welcome the bridegroom when He comes.
