In a world that often measures strength by might and power, we are reminded through the words of the Lord to Zerubbabel that true success does not come from human effort alone. "Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the Lord of hosts" (Zechariah 4:6). This profound truth resonates deeply, especially when we reflect on the teachings of Jesus in Matthew 25:1–13, where He shares the Parable of the Ten Virgins.

In this parable, ten virgins await the arrival of the bridegroom. Five are wise, having brought extra oil for their lamps, while five are foolish, unprepared for the delay. When the time comes, the wise virgins are ready to enter the wedding feast, while the foolish ones are left outside. This story illustrates the importance of preparation and reliance on God’s Spirit rather than our own strength.

The wise virgins did not rely solely on the initial light of their lamps; they understood that true readiness requires ongoing replenishment. Similarly, when we face life’s challenges, it is easy to rely on our own abilities, our might, or our plans. However, as Zechariah reminds us, our efforts are futile without the empowerment of the Holy Spirit. Jesus, too, emphasizes this readiness as He calls us to be vigilant and prepared for His return.

In our daily lives, we are often confronted with situations that demand wisdom and discernment. Are we like the wise virgins, ensuring our lamps are filled with oil, or are we running on empty, relying on our own understanding? Our relationship with the Holy Spirit is essential in this journey. It is through His guidance that we can navigate the complexities of life and be prepared for the coming of our Lord.

As we reflect on these scriptures, let us consider how we can invite the Holy Spirit into our daily routines, allowing Him to fill us with His wisdom and strength. When we align our hearts with His, we are empowered to act in ways that reflect His love and grace. This is not about striving harder but about surrendering deeper.

Let us challenge ourselves with these self-assessment questions:

1. Am I relying on my own strength and abilities, or am I seeking the guidance of the Holy Spirit in my decisions?

2. How can I ensure that my "lamp" is filled with oil, keeping my relationship with God vibrant and alive?

3. In what ways can I be more prepared for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead?

4. Are there areas in my life where I need to surrender control and trust in God’s Spirit to lead me?

As we seek to be wise like the five virgins, let us remember that it is not by our might or power, but by His Spirit that we find true strength and readiness for all that lies ahead.
