And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. (Revelation 21:3)
As we reflect on this glorious promise from Revelation, we are reminded of the intimate relationship God desires to have with His people. He is not a distant deity watching us from afar; rather, He longs to dwell among us, to be our God, and to call us His people. This truth is profoundly comforting and inspiring, especially as we consider the teachings of Jesus in Matthew 25:1–13, the Parable of the Ten Virgins.
In this parable, Jesus emphasizes the importance of being prepared for His return. The ten virgins represent those who await the bridegroom, with five being wise and prepared, and five being foolish and unready. The wise virgins took oil in their vessels along with their lamps, ensuring they had enough light to meet the bridegroom when He arrived. The foolish virgins, however, failed to prepare adequately and were left in darkness when the moment of truth came.
Just as the wise virgins were ready to greet the bridegroom, we too must be vigilant and prepared for the presence of God in our lives. The promise in Revelation 21:3 assures us that God desires to dwell with us, but it also calls us to action. Are we nurturing our relationship with Him? Are we filling our lamps with the oil of His Word and the Spirit?
In our fast-paced world, it is easy to become distracted and neglect the inner preparation needed for a vibrant faith. The oil represents the Holy Spirit, the presence of Christ in our lives, and the active engagement in our relationship with Him. Just as the wise virgins took the time to prepare, we must invest in our spiritual lives, ensuring we are ready to encounter God’s presence daily.
Let us not be like the foolish virgins who were caught off guard, but rather, let us be wise stewards of our faith. As God dwells among us, we must cultivate an atmosphere that welcomes His presence. This could mean dedicating time for prayer, reading Scripture, serving others, and being attuned to the leading of the Holy Spirit.
