In Deuteronomy 10:12, we find a profound instruction from the Lord: “And now, Israel, what doth the Lord thy God require of thee, but to fear the Lord thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve the Lord thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul.” This verse encapsulates the essence of our relationship with God—a relationship rooted in reverence, love, and service.

As we reflect on this commandment, it is important to connect it with Jesus’ teaching in the Parable of the Ten Virgins found in Matthew 25:1–13. In this parable, we learn about ten virgins who took their lamps to meet the bridegroom. Five were wise and prepared, bringing enough oil, while five were foolish, neglecting to bring extra oil for their lamps. When the bridegroom arrived, only the wise were ready to enter the wedding feast, illustrating the importance of being prepared for the coming of the Lord.

The call to fear the Lord, walk in His ways, love Him, and serve Him with our whole being is a call to preparation. Like the wise virgins, we are to be vigilant and ready, ensuring our hearts and souls are filled with the oil of the Holy Spirit. The oil represents our relationship with God, the intimacy we cultivate through prayer, worship, and obedience. Just as the wise virgins took the time to prepare, we too must invest in our spiritual lives, deepening our love and commitment to God.

To fear the Lord is not to be terrified but to hold Him in awe and reverence, recognizing His holiness and majesty. This fear propels us to walk in His ways, following the teachings of Jesus and embodying His love in our daily lives. Serving God with all our heart and soul means prioritizing our time and resources to reflect His glory in the world. When we align our lives with His requirements, we are naturally led to be prepared, just as the wise virgins were.

As we journey through life, let us ask ourselves if we are walking in the fullness of what God requires of us. Are we nurturing our relationship with Him? Are we actively preparing for His return by living out His commandments and sharing His love with others?

In the quiet moments of your day, reflect on these questions:

1. Am I spending time in prayer and the Word to cultivate my relationship with God?

2. In what ways can I demonstrate my love for God through service to others?

3. How can I be more vigilant in my spiritual preparation, ensuring I am ready for the Lord’s return?

Let us strive to be wise, filled with the oil that sustains our lamps, so that when the bridegroom comes, we are prepared to enter into His eternal joy.
